New Glasses

Today I got a new pair of glasses, my first new pair for maybe a decade. I know most of you don’t wear glasses every waking hour of the day unlike I do, so you might not appreciate how vital glasses are to blind bastards like me!

I must say, I have left it way too long to get new specs. I had forgotten what 20-20 vision was like. My old pair had been abused beyond belief. They’ve been punched off my face numerous times, thrown across rooms, dropped down muddy holes, covered in paint, etc. You name it, it most likely happened to my specs. The amount of scratches on the lenses were extreme but if you wear them from waking up until you go to sleep, you don’t notice how bad they are getting, I suppose it’s just the same as putting weight on, you don’t notice until your trousers don’t fit anymore, but you squeeze into them all the same.

I’ve Photoshopped a little picture to illustrate how my eyes work for you to understand.

It’s quite self explanatory really, the original picture of the gorgeous Gillian Anderson in Number 1 is how I now see with my new glasses, Number 2 is how I normally see the world without glasses and Number 3 is how I saw the world with my old pair of specs.
As you can see, you would have to forgive me if I didn’t recognise you without my glasses on, even at a distance of three feet I’d only have a vague idea who you were. But the amazing thing that I hadn’t noticed with my old pair is how washed-out the world was. Due to the severe scratches on the lenses the whole world was slightly misty and blurred, but because I didn’t know any better I didn’t know. My only gripe was that I couldn’t see the stars at night and put it down to light pollution, but in reality it was my specs.

I’m still adjusting to them, it’s very odd seeing things clearly again, it’s almost like getting a new lease of life. So hooray to clarity of vision, and long may it last!
